It's Taylor Swift's world, and she just allows us to live in it. “Midnights” earned Swift her fourth career Grammy for album of the year on Sunday, an achievement no one can match. It breaks a tie with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder, who each won the honor three times. Swift was the last example of an action-packed show where women earned the biggest honors and had the majority of the most memorable performances. There was a brief pause before SZA accepted an award for best R&B song, since she was changing backstage.

It’s hard to believe that at 80 years old, after a groundbreaking career in music, there are still new achievements left for Joni Mitchell. But on Sunday night, she did something for the first time: performed on the Grammys. Joined by Brandi Carlile, Jacob Collier, Lucius, Blake Mills, Allison Russell and SistaStrings, the singer-songwriter played “Both Sides Now.”Carlile, one of Mitchell’s most high-profile champions, is largely responsible for bringing her hero back to the stage, and she introduced Mitchell, who earlier won the Grammy for best folk album for “Joni Mitchell at Newport.” Nine years ago, Mitchell had an aneurysm and largely vanished from the public eye; her legions of fans feared that her singing days were complete. But the writer and unmistakable soprano behind classics like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “A Case of You” was not finished. She made a surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival alongside Carlile, as well as musicians including Wynonna Judd and Marcus Mumford.

Nine years ago, Joni Mitchell fans wondered if they might ever hear her perform again, after Mitchell — the Canadian singer-songwriter and icon of the folk movement — had an aneurysm that initially left her unable to speak. But in recent years she has made a gradual recovery, and in 2022 she surprised the music world with a performance at the Newport Folk Festival. And on Sunday, at age 80, Mitchell is set to perform at the Grammy Awards for the first time. Show organizers offered no details about her appearance, including whether she is expected to play solo or with guests. “To hear Mitchell hit certain notes again in that inimitable voice was like glimpsing, in the wild, a magnificent bird long feared to have gone extinct.”

Dolly Parton ‘Rockstar’ album takeaways

CNN —It’s already a vital American truth that Dolly Parton is a national treasure, and has been for decades. From there, Parton saw a challenge to become a rockstar in her own right, and after her husband suggested she do a rock album, she embarked on the journey, culminating with Friday’s release of her appropriately titled forty-ninth (!!) Cover of "Rockstar" by Dolly Parton. Butterfly Records/APThe second track is also an original song, “World on Fire,” which dutifully tries to ruffle some feathers (like a rockstar would) by commenting on the state of the world today. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Last year, Dolly Parton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — against her wishes. Now, almost exactly a year later, she's releasing her first rock ‘n’ roll album, appropriately titled “Rockstar," on Friday. Parton once thought she'd record a “Linda Ronstadt-type rock album,” but had felt she was getting too old. “I care about people, human suffering and all of that.”“World On Fire,” she says, was written after she thought the album was completed. For now, Parton says “Rockstar” is her first and last rock album.

NEW YORK (AP) — Fans of hip-hop, country, pop, funk, R&B and rock all have reason to cheer the 2023 class entering the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Missy Elliott, Kate Bush, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Chaka Khan, “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius and the late George Michael will be inducted into the hall on Friday night in New York City. Also entering the hall are The Spinners, Rage Against the Machine, DJ Kool Herc, Link Wray, Al Kooper and Elton John’s longtime co-songwriter Bernie Taupin. The Canadian dream-pop band Alvvays played first; its last album, “Blue Rev,” was one of my favorites of 2022, and I especially love this fuzzed out, gently melancholic second track. Tanya Tucker: “Delta Dawn”When I traveled to the Gorge in Washington earlier this summer to catch Brandi Carlile’s Echoes Through the Canyon festival — and, you know, a certain very, very special headliner — I was lucky enough to catch an early evening set by the country icon Tanya Tucker. My first favorite part was when Tucker uncorked a bottle of her signature tequila and passed it around the front row. Each Highwoman played a solo cover during the set, and Shires wowed me with a poignant rendition of “Always on My Mind,” which she dedicated to Bobbie Nelson. Luckily, you didn’t just have to be there: The studio recording of the song, on which Nelson played piano shortly before she died last year, is gorgeous, and quite close to the version Shires played live.

CNN —The Foo Fighters brought out a special guest over the weekend to pay tribute to Sinéad O’Connor. No cause of death has been released, but London police have said it was not being treated as suspicious. At the festival, Foo Fighter’s frontman Dave Grohl announced, “We’re singing this song for a reason tonight.”“Yes, for a beautiful woman with high intelligence and deep empathy, way ahead of her time, who is no longer with us,” Morissette added. “This is for her.”It’s just one of many expressions of grief and tribute to O’Connor. Singers Pink and Brandi Carlile performed a cover of O’Connor’s hit “Nothing Compares 2 You,” (which was written and composed by Prince) during Pink’s concert in Cincinnati after O’Connor’s death was announced.

The Joni Mitchell Renaissance
  + stars: | 2023-06-17 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Last summer at the Newport Folk Festival, fans of the singer Brandi Carlile were treated to a shocking surprise: a guest appearance by Joni Mitchell, who had been barely seen in public since recovering from an aneurysm in 2015. The joyful performance went old-school viral — a cross-generational feel-good sensation. This month came the second wave of the comeback: a nearly three-hour Joni Jam at Carlile’s Echoes Through the Canyon festival in Washington, that featured Mitchell singing and playing electric guitar accompanied by acolytes: Annie Lennox, Allison Russell, Wendy and Lisa, Sarah McLachlan, and others. On this week’s Popcast, a conversation about how Mitchell was received during her career peak, the recent steps she’s taken toward public performance and how she is remaking her own music in her later years.

Out here, the blue highway signs that usually serve as mile markers instead display the types of apple trees you’re driving by: Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp. I made an eager pilgrimage to this corner of the world over the weekend (along with a bunch of other Joni Mitchell fans) to see Mitchell headline the Gorge Amphitheater at her first ticketed concert in more than 20 years. But the so-called Joni Jam at the Gorge was proof that she’s spent the last year — on the brink of turning 80, no less — working hard to strengthen her voice. Like the Newport set, the Joni Jam was communal by nature, spearheaded by Mitchell’s friend Brandi Carlile and designed to have the feel of the musical gatherings Mitchell frequently hosts in her living room. That made the show feel relatively egoless: Though there were some headline-worthy names present, there were no dramatic, please-welcome-to-the-stage entrances or bowed departures.

After the first few songs — including rousing, singalong renditions of “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Raised on Robbery” — a recognition seemed to ripple through the crowd: Mitchell’s voice had grown even stronger, richer and nimbler in the year since those Newport videos went viral. In that previous performance, Carlile had often guided Mitchell or taken on lead vocal duties herself. But at the Gorge, Mitchell was once again in control. Mitchell held court in pigtail braids, chic sunglasses and a floral silk shirt that billowed in the canyon winds. Part of any Joni Jam is not just singing with Mitchell, Carlile told the crowd, but singing for her.

Listen along on Spotify as you read. Kacey Musgraves: “Mother”The shortest, sparsest song on Kacey Musgraves’s 2018 album, “Golden Hour,” is also the most emotionally piercing. “I’m just sitting here, thinking ’bout the time that’s slipping and missing my mother,” the country renegade sings with heartbreaking plaintiveness, before zooming out a generation and imagining that her own mother is probably doing the same. Musgraves has said that “Mother” is one of the “Golden Hour” songs she wrote while tripping on LSD — but don’t tell her mom that part. Merle Haggard: “Mama Tried”“Instead of life in prison I was doing one-to-15 years,” Merle Haggard once admitted of the slight embellishment as to how he spent his 21st birthday in one of his most famous (and semi-autobiographical) songs.

While the music industry struggled, coming back in fits and starts as the pandemic receded, the genre-straddling musical artist Brandi Carlile ‘s year was epic beyond all measure. Her memoir, “Broken Horses,” released last year, became a worldwide bestseller. And her album “In These Silent Days” racked up seven Grammy nominations in October, and led to a massive tour that stretched throughout this year. That tour, most notably, included a stop at the Newport Folk Festival, where Ms. Carlile, 42, brought her hero, Joni Mitchell , on stage for Ms. Mitchell’s first live appearance in 20 years. And, capping off her exceptional year, in November Ms. Carlile joined another of her longtime heroes, Elton John , at Dodger Stadium, for what was billed as his final U.S. concert performance.
